Mickey Guyton to Receive Breakout Artist Award at ‘CMT Artists of the Year’

Mickey Guyton, a singer-songwriter currently not lacking in informal honors, will earn a formal one when CMT presents her with a special award for "Breakout Artist of the Year" as part of its "CMT Artists of the Year" live broadcast on October 13.

The only times the network has given the applause before was when the title was awarded to Chris Stapleton in 2015, Kelsea Ballerini in 2016 and Ashley McBryde two years ago - all early in-game seals of approval that have aged well.

Of course, CMT isn't exactly taking a chance on a stranger in Guyton. Although his debut full-length album ("Remember Her Name") won't be out until this Friday, Guyton has been releasing singles and EPs to considerable acclaim and media attention for over six years, as the network well knows, having released his first music video "Better Than You Left Me" in January 2015.

One of Guyton's champions on the network is Leslie Fram, Senior Vice President of Music and Talent, who was instrumental in naming the singer to CMT's 2014 Next Women of Country class, before her first single came out. of an important seal.

When Fram was honored by the Innovation in Music Awards in 2017, she dedicated her acceptance speech to taking Guyton on stage to expose her to the crowd, at which point Guyton sang Coldplay's "Yellow" in honor of rock radio. alternative to Fram. estate.

"After relentlessly pursuing her country music dreams for years, her perseverance, tenacity and spirit have culminated in this spectacular moment of recognition where she is finally receiving the credit she deserves," said Fram.

The "Artists of the Year" special airs live from Nashville's Schermerhorn Symphony Center on October 13 at 9 p.m. ET / 8 CT and is delayed for the West Coast at 9. The top honorees for 2021 are Luke Combs, Kane Brown, Gabby Barrett, Kelsea Ballerini and Chris Stapleton.

Guyton recently became the first black solo artist in history to earn a country Grammy nomination, for her single "Black Like Me," which she sang on the Grammy broadcast earlier this year. She is currently nominated for New Artist of the Year at the CMA Awards, to be held in November.

At CMT, Guyton was a major actor at this summer's CMT Video Music Awards, performing twice and featuring Linda Martell, a pioneering black country artist, with a Lifetime Achievement Award from her. She also co-hosted the most recent Academy of Country Music Awards with Keith Urban.

Guyton recently appeared acting and discussing her new work on an episode of "Live From My Den," a series produced by Artists Den and available exclusively on Variety.com.
